How to convert military time

A 24-hour clock gives each hour a different number, so AM and PM are unnecessary. A 12-hour clock repeats hours 1–12 twice a day. Converting between them changes the hour notation, not the time itself.

Military to standard time

  1. Separate the hours and minutes: 1730 = 17:30.
  2. For hours above 12, subtract 12: 17 − 12 = 5.
  3. Add PM: 1730 = 5:30 PM.

Standard to military time

  1. For PM hours after noon, add 12: 5 + 12 = 17.
  2. Keep the minutes: 5:30 PM = 17:30.
  3. Write four digits: 1730.

Remember noon and midnight. 12:00 PM is 1200. 12:00 AM is 0000. Morning hours below 10 need a leading zero: 7:05 AM is 0705.

Military time questions, answered

How do I convert military time to standard time?

Keep the minutes the same. For hours 13 through 23, subtract 12 and add PM. Hours 01 through 11 use AM. 0000 is 12:00 AM; 1200 is 12:00 PM.

How do I convert standard time to military time?

For AM times, keep the hour and add a leading zero when needed. Change 12 AM to 00. For PM times after 12 PM, add 12 to the hour. For example, 5:30 PM becomes 1730.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

0000 means the start of a day. 2400 may mark the end of a day: the same instant as 0000 on the following day. This converter accepts 2400 and labels it as next-day midnight.

What is 1700 in military time?

1700 is 5:00 PM. Likewise, 1600 is 4:00 PM, 1800 is 6:00 PM, and 2000 is 8:00 PM. The minutes stay the same.

Does military time use a colon?

Military time is commonly written as four digits, such as 1730. The equivalent 24-hour clock time is 17:30. This tool accepts both forms.

Does changing the time zone change my conversion?

No. The time zone selector changes the live clock. A 12-hour to 24-hour conversion only changes how a local time is written; it does not move that time to another zone.
